Why does reading by flashlight seem so much fun? even grown-ups couldn’t resist last week when the third grade classes at Kernsville elementary celebrated Read Across America week with a Flashlight reading afternoon.
It was quite a sight: dozens of parents, lugging pillows and sleeping bags into the school. After shoes were kicked off and snacks passed out, we all made nests on the class room floor and read by the flashlight. The room was hushed. Maybe it was the abundance of teddy bears and pillows muffling sound in the room. maybe it was because the kids could feel the specialness of the day. Whatever the case, it was a wonderful, relaxing afternoon.
Don’t wait for a special occasion. build a fort with your kids or just hunker down under a comforter and read by flashlight. You won’t regret it.
